Derrick Weston Bio

Derrick Weston is a writer, theologian, filmmaker, podcaster, and educator whose recent work has centered on the intersection of food and faith. Weston received his B.A. in film studies from the University of Pittsburgh. It was there that he began to think about the power of story to change and influence society. He began his career as a small church pastor and community organizer on the staff of community-based non-profits. He received his Masters of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary and later received a certification in health ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary.

His vocation began to come into focus when he was a part of the Re: Generate fellowship on food, faith, and ecology through Wake Forest Divinity School. It was there that he began considering the intersections of food and faith that would become the focus on his work. In 2020, he received a grant from the Louisville Institute to further explore this intersection. That grant led to the expansion of the food and faith podcast, a project that he first joined as editor then became co-host in 2019. It also led to the creation of Spoon, Spade, and Soul, a similar podcast with an emphasis on the agrarian ministry happening within the Episcopal church. It was also at that time that the film project “A Wilderness Like Eden” began in collaboration with ANKOSFilms. The series, which is currently in development, highlights the work of church-based agricultural projects.

This work on food became an entry point into larger ecological issues. In 2021 he joined the board of the interfaith partners for the Chesapeake. Then in 2023, Weston began serving as the theological education and training coordinator for Creation Justice Ministries, an ecumenical and national organization committed to helping Christians live in right relationship with God’s creation. In the same year, he and his podcast co-host Rev. Anna Woofenden released a book entitled The Just Kitchen: Invitations to Sustainability, Cooking, Connection and Celebration through Broadleaf Books. In addition to his work at Creation Justice Ministries, Weston serves as cohort supervisor for Candler School of Theology’s new hybrid MDiv program with his cohort focusing on food justice and sustainability. Derrick and his wife Shannon, a licensed leadership coach, have four children and live outside of Baltimore Maryland.
